When you arrive in Tehuaco the mayor of the village will greet
you inside the church speaking in Mayo, don't worry, an interpreter
will translate.
The church is next to an older one that was destroyed by Pancho
Villa's cannons in 1912.
As part of your tour of the village you will walk through one of
the typical adobe walled, dirt covered roof houses. Behind the house,
in her outdoor kitchen the housewife will be cooking tortillas on
a griddle that is over a wood fire.
Anyone who wishes can try their hand at making tortillas by hand.
Everyone can eat hot tortillas with butter, salt and oregano. (The
oregano grows wild in this area.)
Then to the ceremonial ramada where you will watch dancers, in
native dress, who will dance to music played on traditional instruments
made of gourds and on post-colombian guitar and violin. They will
dance "El Venado" (the deer dance). The head dress they wear is
a real deerīs head with flowers on the horns. The 2nd dance is the
"Pascal". The dancer wears a white mask. This mimics the white faces
of the Spanish invaders.
There are no restrictions on taking Photos, this applies in the
Church as well.
